Located in Jinghu District, Wuhu Municipality, Wuhu Old City is at the intersection of Yangtze River and Qingyi River. The total planned land is 22 hectares. The Phase I, located in the middle of the old city, has a planned land of 80,000 square meters. Some buildings are kept inside the city, and some roadways still maintain the overall pattern and traditional commercial style of Ming and Qing Dynasties. The overall planning continues to use the current layout, road network and remains of the old city and strengthens the concept of “city”. Meanwhile, typical elements such as government office in feudal China, town god’s temple and Confucian temple are excavated. The combination of commerce, culture, temples, squares with historical blocks and protected buildings and the formation of cultural blocks with their own characteristics show the Wuhu feature of multicultural coexistence.

The Wuhu Old City is positioned as a historical old city with special regional characteristics, which integrates culture, commerce, residence, tourism, exhibition and leisure. The Wuhu Old City (Phase I) mainly displays the commercial and Confucian cultural heritage of Wuhu and the development of cities along the Yangtze River in modern China. It reflects the cultural characteristics of Wuhu, which is dominated by Hui-style culture, with multiple cultures coexisting and continuously developing.
Project design logic:
Preserve – preserving and repairing components and architectural entities with historical value, reshaping the spatial form and planning texture of the old city, and awakening people’s historical memory of the old city.
Weaving – on the basis of maintaining the basic composition modes of the internal space of traditional Hui-style architecture, such as “patio”, “four water belongs to the hall”, “deep sequence” and “one to three layers of courtyards”, the graphic design of the construction incorporates the style characteristics of “Huizhou style and western appeal”, and improves the style and function according to the needs of modern life.
Regeneration – refining the cultural connotation of Hui-style architecture, demonstrating it with construction methods of modern architecture, and integrating historical and cultural symbols, traditional architectural language and modern architectural space.
