Winner: Yuan Chinese Cuisine by Dexign Matter Studio

Yuan Chinese cuisine – nestled on the busy area of Yonge and Finch at North York, Canada – has undergone a redesign following a bold makeover courtesy of Design Matter Studio.  A modern Chinese-style dining space inspired by the beauty of natural materials, textures and the humanistic feel of Chinese ink and wash painting.  The design aims to blend the rich characteristics of all these elements into the interior space.

The entrance view visualizes the word “cloud” in a simple and elegant way: layers of laser cut panels depicts various images of clouds spreading out, steaming and shining, rosy clouds, in a background of misty and distant mountains.

The main focal point of the dining room is a custom-made bamboo back lit counter that pays homage to traditional Chinese landscape painting.  The feature is carved within a stone marble counter and frosted glass fascia.

The overall palette consists of walnut wood and neutral grey tone punctuated with turquoise accent colors.  Three striking chandelier looms large at the centre of the space, adorned with a subtle lantern pattern.

The feature wall is a modern interpretation of a folding fan with a poem penned by an old calligrapher on the back walls.  The design is formed to show an appreciation of Chinese culture in a modern setting.
