Gold Winner – Revitalization of Old Nanjing Arts Building by AT. AART Design

The planning of this project is positioned as a commercial complex with the theme of immersive experience and drama, which hopes to become a new urban hot spot and a gathering place for young generation.

The current buildings are chaotic and crowded, and the entrance is concealed, resulting in poor visibility. The narrow ground area and the height of 7 floors also bring difficulties to the accessibility of the top three floors. The building lacks the vertical space and crowd gathering activities that commercial buildings require.

The design reuses the original theater on the top floor of the building to create a high-rise space such as a science and innovation workshop and an entertainment center, combining with the roof of the third floor to produce a rare cultural plaza in the city center. The interaction between the interior space and the roof plaza forms a combination of business and cultural innovation, providing a platform for young people to communicate and socialize.

On the one hand, adding a dramatic grand staircase on the building facade provides people with another new perspective to observe and enjoy the city view. On the other hand, it solves the fire-fighting problem. As a result, this aerial cultural event stage will be given the possibility of opening whole 24 hours.

The facade of the building adopts a white tone to give the building a unified style, adding dynamic and fashionable elements, which not only have a sense of culture but also meet the preferences of young people. The stairs on the façade also bring the building rhythm and stimulate people’s desire to explore, achieving the unique charm of the building and forming a new urban landscape landmark.

In the interior, by increasing the vertical space, the interest and experience of the interior space are enriched, creating a special and vivid experience of internal travel, which is easier to attract people to the top floor. From the ground to the roof, the characteristic cultural and commercial spaces are placed in sequence, not only creating a new business model for Nanjing Xinjiekou, but also becoming a stage for cultural activities in this area.
