Gold Winner – The Regeneration Design Of A Historical Village In Suzhou | Studio Hu, Nanjing University; Interior Architecture Studio

Xiemaqiao Village is located in the suburbs of Suzhou and close to Shanghai. Originated from Southern Song Dynasty (AD.12c-13c), It exists more than 800 years. However, in the quickly modernization and industrialization process since the beginning of this century, the historical village faces serious challenges of population loss and decline. With the support of the national rural revitalization policy, our project proposed the design vision of “Land of Peach Blossoms” and the regeneration strategy called “Beautiful village +”, introducing cultural and tourism industries to transform the historical village into a suburban destination of leisure and consumption for the citizens from nearby big cities. Through a set of spatial design strategies and renewal projects derived from the core regeneration strategy, the historical village is now on its way to restoring vitality.
