2024 GFD 🏆 Awards

Gold Winner | Queensway Canopy | Building & Research Institute, HDB

Queensway Canopy is a public housing development in Queensway Estate, Singapore. Designed with health and wellness in mind, the design of this precinct responds sensitively to the site’s adjacency to the Rail Corridor – a historical Malayan Railway train line. Today, the Rail Corridor is a recreational park that connects through the city along the historical train line.

The design capitalizes on the continuous green passage that promotes recreational and ecological activity. High-rise towers step down to a series of low-rise, Rail Corridor-facing blocks, on which interconnected roof gardens sit. This urban response aims to preserve a sense of openness and greenery. The site layout offers generous car-free green spaces, from which residents would experience seamless access to a green recreational corridor. The design of Queensway Canopy is also inspired by heritage elements surrounding the site, with the building façade and precinct elements influenced by the historical Malayan Railway and black-and-white houses within its locality.

Inclusivity is also central to the scheme. Apart from three and four-room public housing apartments, the project features a new unit type of Community Care Apartments (CCA), which supports ageing-in-place for residents. The CCA is an assisted living concept in public housing that offers senior-friendly features, customizable care services, and social activity spaces.

Well-connected community and landscaped spaces, which include a Social & Wellness Hub and a therapeutic garden, offer inter-generational and age-friendly amenities for all. The project also introduces the first ActiveSG town gym in collaboration with SportSG, Singapore’s sports development agency. The pilot town gym is co-located with a Childcare Centre and an Active Ageing Centre within the Social & Wellness Hub, with the aim of fostering active, connected inter-generational communities. The elements are thoughtfully integrated into a new public residential development for Singaporeans across all walks of life.
