Gold Winner | Sanxia Bashu Middle School | XI ZHU DESIGN + CMCU

Sanxia Bashu Middle School is located in Wuxi County, Chongqing City, which has 84 classes (48 classes in senior middle school and 36 classes in junior middle school) with a total construction area of 80083.25 square meters. The functional layout includes teaching building, auditorium, gymnasium, canteen, dormitory, playground and corridor. Through the design of adapting to the terrain, the project cleverly uses the natural height difference of 54 meters to achieve a harmonious coexistence between human and nature. The multi-level back sets increase the sense of hierarchy and viewing platform, so that teachers and students can enjoy the natural beauty at any time, while providing rich teaching and activity space to meet the needs of modern education. The cantileved and elevated design enhances the modernity and aesthetics of the building, providing additional space for multi-functional use.

Design details

In terms of details, the project pays special attention to barrier-free design. Barrier-free ramps, elevators and passageways are designed to ensure that each floor of the teaching building is easily accessible, and people with limited mobility can participate in teaching activities without barriers. At the same time, the site elevation difference is used to form multiple interactive spaces, including teaching areas, leisure areas and green areas, which are both independent and interconnected, providing a variety of activity places, promoting communication and interaction, and creating a dynamic learning and working environment.

Material use

Environmentally friendly and local materials will be used to reduce the carbon footprint and environmental impact. The teaching buildings and other major buildings are made of durable local stone and recycled concrete to ensure a long service life. Low-maintenance, weather-resistant materials, such as aluminum and high-performance glass, will be chosen for the facade to reduce maintenance costs and enhance the modern sense. The interior decoration materials are selected with low VOC paint and environmentally friendly flooring to ensure indoor air quality and users’ health.

Social benefit

Sanxia Bashu Middle School not only meets the local demand for quality educational resources, but provides the community with a comprehensive space that integrates teaching, cultural and sports activities. The auditorium, gymnasium and outdoor activity venue are open to the community in spare time, becoming an important place for community cultural activities and physical exercise, enhancing the interaction and integration between the school and community. In addition, the project provides a large number of local employment opportunities and promotes local economic development.

Sustainable value

The project adheres to the principle of sustainable development and pays attention to energy conservation and environmental protection during the design and construction process. It reduces reliance on artificial lighting and air conditioning by utilizing natural ventilation and daylighting systems. Buildings are equipped with rainwater harvesting and reuse systems for green irrigation and non-potable water needs, reducing water waste. Roof greening and vertical greening design not only beautify the environment, but also improve the campus microclimate and further enhance the ecological benefits of the building.

Technological innovation

Several technological innovations are used in the design and construction of the project. First, BIM technology is widely used to improve design and construction accuracy and efficiency. Secondly, the building uses intelligent control systems to achieve intelligent management of lighting, ventilation, temperature and security, improving energy efficiency and user comfort. Finally, the building is equipped with solar photovoltaic power generation system, through the use of renewable energy, reduce dependence on traditional energy, to achieve energy conservation and emission reduction targets.
