The site is located on the new districts of the city of Ganzhou, the second large city of Jiangxi province. This city has been well developed in chinese history, especially, lots of typical traditional chinese buildings are existing with strong Song style. City of Ganzhou is also known as “Jiangnan Song city” in China. Under this circumstance, architecture design would base on the study of local history to recreate a modern Song style. This strategy is expected to build familiar living surrounding for future residents from both physical space and spiritual environment. It also can reduce the loss of mental identification of future residents in the urban modernization.
Through the joint efforts of design team, the developer, manufacturers and construction parties, a series of Song Dynasty elements (architecture, porcelain, painting) were reconstructed and interpreted, and modern materials and fine craftsmanship were used to implement this project. A modern Song style style was formed. Now, this project has not finished the construction. But the finished part can already reflect the unique style.

- Jiangnan Song City
Ganzhou is relatively closed in geographical environment ，surrounded by mountains. It was mainly connected to Guangzhou through rivers and canals in the Song Dynasty. Therefore, a large number of buildings in the bustling ancient city have survived the historical process. In the traditional urban area, city gate, wharf and market have been completely preserved after successive renovations.
These unique buildings and facilities made city of Ganzhou is also called “Jiangnan Song city”
- Aesthetics in the Song Dynasty
During the Song Dynasty, wealth was collected in society trough international tradement. The citizens were the richest in chinese history before 20th century. The aesthetic became to simple and elegant, de-decoration. It seems very close to modern style. But the buildings was slightly complicated to distinguish different social class of owners in scale and roof forms.
Double-eaves veranda roof
The roof utilized “Double-eaves veranda roof” on the main entrance of this community. Similar but more simple style was arranged in each pedestrian entrance and top roof of all apartment buildings.
Roof ridge & Roof ridge decoration
The traditional roof ridge has been reconstructed and simpler to be built.
Plum window shape
The shape of traditional ‘plum window’ was used to decorate background wall and door frame in both interior and exterior space. Combining with the architectural language to create unified style in this whole project.
Queti & Hanging board
‘Queti’ is vertical support structure with decoration function in traditional architecture. The ‘hanging board’ has similar contribution to structure system. It has been recreated with aluminum board as detail decoration of the facade.
Window grilles
The traditional window decorative, window grilles, has been redesign to arranged under the roof and the top window of staircase. This particular form means fortune and wealth.
- community garden
In traditional chinese landscape design, the mainly strategy is containing large scale natural landscape in limited space. To enrich walking experience, the path would guide people observe the landscape from different perspective. This design method could make the landscape to be dynamic observed and be known as ‘Step by Step Scenery’.
With the cooperation of landscape design team, the space between unit buildings have been delicately arranged a series of small theme garden. This can provide rich walking experience to future owners, meet the need people of different age as well.
- main pedestrian entrance
The entrance is designed as a series quality and experienced space to build transition from street to residential community. It can be used as a temporary waiting space to the visitors.
- Typical Unit
The typical unit of this residential project is 170 square meters. The envelop is square, transparent from north to south, with double-sided wide balconies, high-quality lighting and ventilation conditions.
- Facade design
By reconstructing elements of the aesthetic of the Song Dynasty, a experienced facade system has been create. This style is expected to recall the scene of belonging of local residents who lives in city of Ganzhou, a city with rich history since he Song Dynasty.
- sustainable strategy
Buildings of this project meet the requirements of ‘Chinese Two Star Green building’. Through well-designed Thermal envelope, natural lighting, ventilation conditions and positive energy saving facilities, such as photovoltaic panels and low-E glass windows, consumption of energy will be efficiently reduced.
Rainwater gardens are an effective natural purification and disposal technology for rainwater, as well as a biological retention facility. It has the advantages of low construction cost, simple operation and management, natural beauty, and easy integration with the landscape.
