Drawing inspiration from the mountainous natural landscape in Qujiang, the project design lends itself as an analogue to mountains and clouds with its clean, geometric forms of staggering towers and cascading platforms. The three towers, together with an adjacent existing District Youth Center building, form a grand, symmetrical composition framing the entry from the eastern residential zone to the western Dongfang Park, completing the park’s role as the central axis of leisure and amenity spaces overlooked by the District Government building to its north.
The client aims at creating an unconventional mixed-use development where a large amount of community functions, such as leisure, exhibition & events, and public services, are infused into the retail complex. This not only creates problematic adjacencies but also contradicts with the limitation of space. To fully exploit the civic potential of the project, an important decision was made early on in the design process to maximize utilization of outdoor spaces as an extension of GFA-accountable spaces so as to expand the reach of public activities while remain complaint with planning/zoning requirements.
To this end, the Industry Park’s podium defies the opaque monolithic stereotype of conventional retail podiums by unfolding into cascading, interconnected platforms at multiple levels. These platforms echo the public programs of their corresponding interior spaces and become extensions thereof. Their horizontal expanse contrast with the verticality of the three towers, while uniting them with an enriched programmatic transition. An elevated gallery nicknamed “Cloud Deck” floats at the complex’s center to frame its focal point. The Cloud Deck functions as the living room of the city and overlooks the outdoor theatre/sunken plaza underneath as well as the park in its front with its circular, 360-degree gallery. While the podium platforms cater to spontaneous social activities, the massing arrangements between the towers, the podium, the central Cloud Deck gallery, and the sunken plaza work synergistically to create a celebrated experience where visitors could gather for concentrated curations such as performances and talks. In addition, sky lobbies are inserted at the crowns of each tower to highlight them with public activities. These together create a multi-level public space system to accommodate to events and gatherings of various scales and qualities. The project design started in October 2023 was awarded through a public competition by Quzhou Qujiang Agricultural Investment Group Co., Ltd. It is currently in the process of planning approval acquisition. Minquan Wang, Zeyu Cai (SIZE Arch), and Sibei Li (SIZE Arch) are its project architects.
