2026 UDAD 🏆 Awards

Gold Winner – Qingdao Metro Hongdao Line Network Operation Control Center | East China Architecture Design Institute (ECADI)

The project is a core component of Qingdao’s future smart transportation system and the command hub for the city’s planned network of 30 metro lines. Designed as both a large-scale infrastructure facility and a new urban landmark, the project integrates headquarters office functions, a next-generation metro dispatching center, and a comprehensive operations management platform. Its ambition is to establish a world-class control center that reflects the spirit of Qingdao’s mountains and sea culture, while supporting the city’s vision of modern, intelligent, and efficient mobility.

The site is divided by a natural river corridor, and the architectural layout minimizes obstruction to the landscape through a sculpted massing strategy that narrows toward the center. Two towers are positioned diagonally across the site: Tower T1 serves as the main office building, while Tower T2 accommodates operational management teams. A large column-free dispatch hall is placed on the west side to meet demanding technical requirements. Supporting machine rooms and equipment facilities are arranged to ensure optimal proximity and efficiency.

The architectural language emphasizes clarity, stability, and an identity aligned with Qingdao Metro’s public image. The facade takes inspiration from the city’s coastal skyline, using vertical rhythms and soft curves to express openness and resilience. Functional clarity is maintained throughout the design so that the dispatch hall, the symbolic nerve center of the metro network, achieves strong visibility, intuitive organization, and efficient workflows.

The project incorporates advanced technologies including BIM-based lifecycle management, prefabricated construction methods, and intelligent automation systems. These innovations significantly improve construction efficiency, reduce material waste, and enhance green development practices. As the first development within Qingdao’s Business Pilot Zone, the project will also stimulate regional growth and strengthen the surrounding urban framework.

More than an operations facility, the project adopts a human-centered spatial strategy that improves workplace comfort through daylight optimization and efficient spatial planning. Once completed, it will enhance transportation safety and operational efficiency while reinforcing Qingdao’s position as a leading example of smart urban infrastructure.
