2025 UDAD 🏆 Awards

Gold Winner | Airport “Omsk-Fedorovka” | KPLN

Omsk is a city founded as a fortress. An outpost for the protection of the southern borders.
The idea of a fortress as a guard of the steppes is reflected in the image of the airport.
A mirror reminiscence is revealed here in two aspects at once.
Visual-imaginative: inverse-cone volumes – a reflection of the elements of the traditional
Fence of a russian wooden fortress. And meaningful – a protective structure designed to barrier the path is transformed into an air harbor that opens many ways.

The design area is located 15 km from the city border (27 km from the city center).

The existing airport hinders the development of the central part of the city and carries operational risks associated with its location and creates noise pollution that spreads over an area of more than 10 thousand hectares.

The interior concept involves the integration of a winter garden, which symbolizes the vegetable garden that existed inside the prison in case of a siege.

Conical volumes suggest the design of skylights that let in daylight. This technique helps save energy, as it allows natural light to enter the room without requiring the use of artificial light sources.

The airport is spread over two floors, which helped reduce the number of escalators,

elevators and stairs, making the building intuitive and comfortable. The capacity increases, logistics is simplified and the path from the entrance to the jet bridges is shortened.
