This 190㎡ residential project interprets the essence of everyday life through a thoughtful focus on detail, proportion, and atmosphere. The design draws inspiration from philosopher Kiyokazu Washida’s concept of “hidden scenery,” highlighting life’s fleeting, delicate, and often-overlooked moments. Through proportion, rhythm, light, and materiality, the project creates a home that is calm yet emotionally resonant, where every detail enriches the lived experience.

The spatial sequence begins with a transitional “gray space” that buffers the entrance, moderating pace and emotion. For this one-unit-per-floor residence, the elevator hall acts as a private courtyard. Redesigned entry doors, adjusted exterior windows, and sheer curtains unify the façade, creating a refined, serene threshold that serves as the first point of arrival and departure, like grooming one’s appearance before stepping out.
Inside, warm wooden elements extend from the walls to the ceiling, greeting residents with comforting tactile warmth. A recessed niche beside the entryway frames a vertical shaft of light, automatically illuminating to welcome occupants home. Essential storage is discreetly concealed behind cabinetry, balanced visually by a geometrically cut single chair positioned opposite the TV wall, establishing harmony within the space.
Entering the living room, the mood shifts. A second “recess” cradles the sofa, offering a cocoon-like enclosure where materials flow naturally through subtle gaps. Horizontal structural lines feature integrated lighting accents that highlight fine craftsmanship. The TV is flush-mounted with retractable honeycomb shades, paired with a concealed display cabinet that dynamically moves, introducing playful yet sophisticated façade articulation.
Layering enriches spatial experience as the living room cabinetry extends toward the kitchen, integrating structural beams and transitioning materials to signal functional change. The kitchen recesses into a deep backdrop where sunlight filters through wooden louvers, evoking a warm sunset glow. Incorporating the original balcony expands the dining area with a combined long table and bar, fostering family interaction. A compact worktop ingeniously utilizes existing wall depth, maximizing spatial efficiency and multi-functionality.
Private zones are organized within a measurable proportional system. The secondary bedroom centers on a tatami-style layout, with wood materials flowing continuously from door to cabinets and window sills, harmonizing storage and aesthetics. The master bedroom expands by absorbing the former study, now featuring a walk-in closet that elevates daily comfort. A recessed sliding door separates the study, while flooring transitions subtly to delineate spaces and add warmth.
The connecting corridor is articulated by a storage unit set apart from the wall, allowing cladding materials to flow and a vertical light shaft to project down the passage. This gentle illumination crafts a ritualistic moment of passage, metaphorically representing meaningful fragments of everyday life as “daily luminosity.” YIN YI Design’s approach is rooted in “proper measure,” balancing proportion, light, and rhythm through a multi-perspective lens. The project embodies a delicate harmony between stillness and movement, shadow and light, transforming the ordinary into a lived poetry—a pale scenery of life where time and breath softly unfold.
