2024 GFD 🏆 Awards

Gold Winner | The Hazel McCallion Campus Student Centre (HMCSC) at Sheridan College | Moriyama Teshima Architects and Montgomery Sisam Architects

The Hazel McCallion Campus Student Centre (HMCSC or Phase 2A Building) is an integral addition to the campus expansion project with a range of amenity spaces and athletics facilities designed to give diversity and depth to the student experience. The 70,000 ft2 student hub connects to the previously completed Phase 2 academic building, and provides a community gathering space on campus, while creating a sense of place in the heart of the College and the growing neighbourhood of downtown Mississauga. The building houses a fitness centre, gymnasium, and running track; study spaces; food outlets; and administrative spaces, among other student-related uses.

Interior spaces are curated to create visual connections between the diverse mix of functions, producing a layered experience as one moves through the building. Expanses of glazing look from the fitness rooms down into the gymnasium. Meeting rooms and study spaces overlook the central atrium, where a feature staircase connects various programs to each other. A running track circles the building, suspended above the gymnasium and fitness rooms as it cuts across multiple double-height spaces.  At ground level, the building becomes fully transparent, opening itself up to the adjacent park and reinforcing itself as a focal point on campus.

HMCSC is a positive contribution to the campus experience and the broader vision of the Mississauga’s Downtown 21 Master Plan. The building sits along a main arterial and responds to existing geometries and building heights, creating a sense of continuity along the street. With adjacencies to major institutions and urban infrastructure, including 11 bus lines, future light rail transit and high travel roadways, ease of site access was of critical importance to the success of the project. Pathways were designed to connect directly to existing pedestrian and cyclist routes and create a seamless integration into the urban fabric.

Energy conservation and sustainability were a priority for the projects. A doing-more-with-less attitude permeates the building. Highly adaptable platforms, partitioning and multi-purpose spaces provide both specificity and flexibility. The simple, durable aluminum cladding creates a dynamic building expression, while maintaining an efficient enclosure. The extruded white vertical fins are designed to respond to solar paths and mitigate heat gain without obstructing views or daylight. Materials and assemblies were carefully selected to reduce emissions and limit waste over the building’s life cycle.

The project was designed to support future intensification while enhancing the quality of the public realm, driven by the needs of the College as well as positive city-building. HMCSC provides definition and active edges at grade, inviting users to occupy all sides of the building. A covered walkway feeds into existing pedestrian paths through the campus and connects to the double height atrium. Indoor-outdoor connections are enhanced by the porosity of the ground floor, with sliding glazed doors connecting interior public spaces, such as the café and student social areas, to an outdoor patio, urban playground and new turf field.

HMCSC’s architecture reflects its ambitions: a simple, austere form hosts a dynamic interior, and creates a sophisticated yet accessible and integrated experience. The straightforward volume is articulated by extruded white aluminum vertical fins that vary in spacing and depth in response to solar orientation, while transparent patches offer glimpses into the mass to expose parts of the gym, fitness areas and running track. Although the building is striking, it establishes a sense of community within its suburban setting by offering visual and physical connections to its surroundings, strengthening the College’s identity and harmonizing with the greater community.
