Hengli Station and Hengli East Station are the two most critical multi-line interchange stations at the tip of Hengli Island . With a radius of 800 meters, the planning area of Hengli is about 220.4 hectares . The planning scope of the Hengli East station is 146 hectares.

In 2021, commissioned by the Nansha Pearl Bay Administration, cooperating with AECOM, We launched the TOD planning and design of Hengli Station and Hengli East Station, aiming to create a high-standard, high-quality urban landmark area.

Chanllenges:

The Hengli Island Tip area is still in the initial stage of development, meeting a series of challenges

Issue 1 : The separation between the new city and the main city

Currently, only Line 18 is in operation, and the transport service lags behind the land development, forming a trouble in the connection between the island and the outside.

Issue 2: The separation of New City and Industry

The scale of emerging industries lack attractive job opportunities for high-end professionals. The city’s comprehensive service capabilities are weak, limiting its appeal to residents.

Issue 3: The Separation of the new city and the stations.

The rail stations and urban development are not well-coordinated. Rail resources, industries, and urban space has not been effectively integrated yet.

Strategies

Based on the above challenges, we proposed four strategies to relieve the fragmentation in the new city.

  • Innovative mixed land use to add value to the industrial diversity

The project has proposed an industrial ecosystem of finance, innovation and technology, as well as comprehensive urban services, and created an all-weather destination in the Greater Bay Area by formulating mixed land use horizontally and vertically, accelerating the area to become an international financial platform.

2) An integrated underground avenue to reduce separation of the city and the stations.

To relieve the separation between the two sides of the main roads, we proposed the best layout for seamless connectivity between the rail station and surrounding properties. Designed the underground “Circular pedestrian corridor”, and an underground avenue to relieve the separation on the ground, enabling the seamless connection between rail transit and urban spaces.

3) An integrated underground space to achieve livable space

We created the comfortable underground environment as ground through the sunken plaza, open air courtyard and underground retails. Provided residents with a smooth walking experience directly from the station to underground commercial spaces and sunken plazas.

4) Green transportation network to weave the spatial framework

The project has established a transit-oriented all-weather underground pedestrian system to enhance the integration of the station and the city, further can strengthen the accessibility to the waterfront and open space.
