Another great opportunity. APR’s next award Urban Design & Architecture Design Awards 2019 is open for Registration. Don’t miss the chance, its a huge platform for architects.

The building is located in the city of Viana do Castelo in Portugal, is a privileged block in terms of location, it is bordered on the west by Picota Street, next by the Erva Square. The building, with an area of deployment of 66m2 consists of ground floor and 3 floors, features an architecture of urban Portuguese language on the end of the nineteenth century.

The program summed up essentially in maintaining the premises on the ground floor and the creation of two housing for local accommodation. The project was conceived in order to maintain the identity of the building, without misrepresenting the memory that they emanate.

There was the need for a new structure based on wooden profiles, giving the building a great stability. All the necessary structural development was carried out respecting the initial structural mesh.

The finishing materials show contemporary materials, linked to the memory of the building, cohabiting in perfect symbiosis with the existing elements.

It highlights the work the combination of joinery and plasterboard with the existing stone masonry facings. On the top floor, the spatial distribution is enhanced by structural rafters of the roof timbers, with the space environment with adequate natural lighting.

They were used as colors. The green in the wall cloths and the dark green and white in the wooden window frames that run the whole building, giving a sober and distinct image.

The tile of the west facade was all recovered and the last floor recessed was all covered with corrugated dark red plates with the wooden frame was also painted the same color, dark red.

Our intervention, located in the historical center of the city of Viana do Castelo, contributed to rehabilitate that urban space, gaining attractiveness, light, and collaborating with the dignification of the city.
