2024 GFD 🏆 Awards

Gold Winner | 22520 W. Uhea | McClellan, Badiyi & Associates Architects

Project site is located at Woodland Hills area which a suburb of Los Angeles. The site is on a steep slope, strict zoning regulations govern the height, and projection of the building vertically as are shown on sheet 02. The buildable area of the house, based on the zoning regulations slope analysis. The analysis indicated that 3,670 sf of this property which is 10,500 can be allocated to the house and attached garage. In terms of context, many/most of the existing houses built during the 60s, 70s and 80s when the current zoning and aesthetic regulations of the City of Los Angeles were not in place for the area. Thus many, due to hillside construction cost, did not take advantage of the sloping nature of their sites.

Entrance to the site was selected at the most economical location from Uhea road to minimize earthwork as well as consideration for an old oak tree, which is a protected species under the State of California environmental protection regulation. (Sheet 04 and 1/Sheet 03) The house consists of three floors, ground floor which is at Uhea road level (Sheet 04), level 1 below where the master bedroom and guest bed rooms are located (1/Sheet 05) and level 2 below where the pool and recreation deck is located (2/Sheet 05). Project’s roof is metal insulated roof panels and is continuous across the entire house (1&3/Sheet 03). Given the roof is visible from the road, an additional color panels were introduced to match the array of colors within the context. The project creates a private courtyard at the Uhea roadside where connects to all three levels of the building and during summer provides a tranquil shaded area for outdoor activities or entertainment.

Project takes full advantage of the spectacular view at all levels with large openings as well as exterior decks. The colors dark gray and white were utilized to further break the volume and allow the building to blend in with the colors and shades of the areas found in forested hillsides as shown on Sheet 01 and 2/Sheet 03
