Rather than adopting a closed and institutionalized care model, the project emphasizes controlled openness. Within a secure framework, the design reconstructs familiar life scenes to help residents maintain autonomy, reduce anxiety, and slow cognitive decline. The master plan integrates an Alzheimer’s care center, a rehabilitation hospital, and a nursing facility, providing continuous care from mild to severe stages.

The spatial structure is defined by open courtyards, looped walking paths, garden corridors, and small-group activity gardens, forming a continuous and intuitive circulation system that allows residents to move freely without getting lost. These interconnected spaces encourage exploration, social interaction, and daily routines.

The design incorporates “life-scenario therapy” and multisensory strategies. Familiar settings such as small streets, a post office, flower shop, and communal gathering areas are combined with carefully calibrated colors, textures, scents, and sounds to create a recognizable sensory map. Medical staff participate in daily life through role-based interaction rather than visible supervision, enabling discreet and respectful care. By integrating landscape, safety, accessibility, and healthcare standards into a unified spatial strategy, the project establishes a dementia-friendly environment that balances efficiency with empathy. It offers a replicable model for dementia care in China, demonstrating how interior architecture can support dignity, autonomy, and emotional well-being for vulnerable populations.
