The design concept – “Dynamic Water” is adopted to present a distinctive and innovative image. The architectural and landscape design language using sculptural curvy form reflects dynamic motion of water and waves, promotes connectivity to neighbourhood and enhances fluidity of circulation. The water concept also relates to a Chinese saying “海納百川” which suggests universal and integrated design.
The VTC campus consists of two building blocks – East Block and West Block. The proposed building height of the East Block (+70mPD) and West Block (+60mPD) has observed height restriction outlined in the Outline Zoning Plan in response to the previous public consultations. The two building blocks are widely separated for both visual and wind corridors in the vicinity, with building connection on basement, G/F, 1/F outdoor landscape area, 6-7/F and 8/F roof landscape area to fulfill operation and education needs. Remaining floors between two building blocks are permeable to promote natural ventilation in neighbourhood. Exterior void is designed at building link on 6-8/F to further enhance cross ventilation.
An elevated landscape deck is designed at promenade in connection with 1/F outdoor landscape area at VTC campus to further enhance connectivity to promenade. The elevated deck is designed in white wavy expression to simulate water splash generated while VTC building steers like a giant wheel directing towards South China Sea. The campus building is also setback from street significantly with landscape entrance plaza design.
The façade design aims to achieve three main design principles – to express the “Dynamic Water” concept, to achieve sustainable façade design and to consider the exterior-interior relationship. Multi-level landscape terraces are integrated to various floors of the building perimeter. Vertical mullions in typologies of various depths and orientations are designed to counteract sun exposure and express ‘Dynamic Water’ façade gesture.
The overall planting theme- “Blossom Ensemble” “百花齊放” symbolizing prosperity and diversity, with flowering season and colours to promote visual interest. Together with interior design concept of “Wide Sea and Vast Sky” “海闊天空”, “Future and Flexible Inter-disciplinary Campus” (FFIC) planning principle was adopted with the PEST (Political, Economic, Social and Technological) analysis as a planning tool to identify potential opportunities for overall spatial planning. The design embodies philosophy of “海納百川” (sea embraces all rivers), fostering inclusivity and integration in VPET. Inspired by “百花齊放” (Blossom Ensemble), we celebrate diverse talents and aspirations of our students, creating an environment where every individual can thrive. “海闊天空” (Wide Sea and Vast Sky) symbolizes our commitment to limitless opportunities for exploration and growth, aligning with VTC’s vision of a future-ready, interdisciplinary campus at Kowloon East.
