2025 GFD 🏆 Awards

Gold Winner – Manitoga Design Collection + Shop | Studio Joseph

The shop is a celebration of Russel and Mary Wright’s design genius, seamlessly blending a gallery, a place for community gathering, and retail sales of the Wrights’ ceramics, glassware, and other related products. The approach melds an organic, formal language and playful elements that inspire all who visit to learn more about the Wrights’ legacy. In addition, it encourages people to explore their former home, Dragon Rock, and landscape at Manitoga, in nearby Garrison.  The shop brings together a diverse set of requirements in an environment that harmonizes with Wrights’ ideas with a minimalist display, natural materials, and a bold yet reductive palette. The design, which embraces the core values of craft, individualism, and experimentation, serves as a bridge between art and commerce.

The shop has four zones: a shelving area for ceramic sales, a central space for lingering and programs, a gallery, and window displays. Each of these places has a related aesthetic that is finetuned to its location and purpose.

Window displays: The corner window includes an installation of Wright’s iconic water pitchers skillfully hung by transparent cable to form a colorful array. This is a playful attraction from both inside and the street. Also at the shop window, low elliptical tables display the ceramic pieces in varying arrays and density.

Retail Displays: The pieces for sale are displayed densely on a series of dark grey shelves that emphasize Wright’s elegant colors and emphasize the forms of the objects as sculptural domestic elements.

Gallery: The gallery area utilizes American rift-cut, white oak as an armature for display. Horizontal shelves flow organically at different heights bringing Wright’s love of nature to the forefront. Below, casework protects fragile pieces.

Central area: A large display table anchors the gallery with a rug, comfy seating and displays. The two overlapping oval tables suggest a natural landscape.

The public response was immediate. Shop attendance exceeds expectations in terms of public attention, visits, and sales. There is strong interest in Russel Wright’s materiality and philosophy. The emphasis on an affordable lifestyle of strong design will be carried forward by public programming. This simple shop has become a place that extends the artist’s vision to a broader community.
