The “OstStern” project in Frankfurt am Main represents a significant urban development on the site of the former Frankfurt Mercedes-Benz headquarters, which has been transformed into a vibrant mixed-use neighborhood, located close to the European Central Bank. Covering a total site area of approximately 19,000 m², the project encompasses a gross floor area of 65,000 m². This includes a variety of residential buildings, a social housing block, office spaces, and a hotel, making “OstStern” a significant addition to the city’s urban landscape. A key component of the “OstStern” project is the section planned by HS02, which focuses on the design and development of a residential complex within the broader site. The HS02-designed portion covers a floor area of approximately 20,000 m² and consists of a total of 241 flats. These flats are distributed across a closed city block, with one separate building located within the inner courtyard of the block, creating a sense of community and privacy while still connecting with the surrounding urban fabric. The residential complex designed by HS02 offers a mix of different unit sizes, contributing to the overall residential capacity of the project.

The design of HS02 is inspired by the architectural concept of “Kontorhäuser” (storage and office buildings with a clear structure and division), characterized by the clear segmentation of larger structures into distinct, coherent units. The substantial facade lengths are divided into individual volumes, creating a rhythm of architectural elements. The facades themselves are further articulated with the use of cornices, pilasters, and framing elements, adding depth and texture to the overall composition. These design strategies allow for a strong visual differentiation between various sections of the building while maintaining a harmonious overall structure.
For the observer, this design creates a dynamic and engaging urban space, with varied volumes and forms that establish a clearly defined address for the residents. The segmentation not only provides striking aesthetic appeal but also reinforces the individuality and identity of the building’s different components, contributing to a well-structured and thoughtfully composed urban environment.
