Creating the PMI Science Square meant reimagining the entire functional and aesthetic design, interior architecture and digital features of the space while seamlessly integrating a whole new structure within an existing one. Aimed to embody PMI’s commitment to a smoke-free world, and the innovation and science that lead to a better future for all, a key aspect of the initiative was to uphold sustainable practices both in the building phase and in how the space would function day to day.

With the objective of breathing new life into a space that lacked a real purpose and alignment with the groundbreaking design and function of the rest of the building, PMI sought to create a destination that is both practical and versatile, as well as adaptable to the various needs of those who use it. It was conceived as a space that would cater to employee learning and sharing about the latest innovations, as well as guests who visit to gain insight into the company’s groundbreaking science and technology.

PMI Science Square was realized as a bright and airy, modular engagement space. While it offers an intimate and comfortable design, its open structure lets the light in and allows the eye to see beyond the walls it perceives. Nestled at the heart of PMI’s R&D facility, the engagement center is built as a modular iron structure integrated within the existing basement. The careful selection of high-quality and sustainable materials echoes the building’s own design, from sleek aluminum walls and glass showcases to durable wooden flooring. It is surrounded by lush greenery and features a refreshing, modern interior with matching earthy tones.

The main framework consists of iron beams, providing a durable and resilient foundation. These are complemented by lightweight yet sturdy aluminum panels, chosen for their recyclability and long lifespan. Furthermore, the use of mechanical fixing systems eliminates the need for adhesives and sealants, which often contain volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that can be harmful to the environment and indoor air quality. PMI meticulously sought out and selected high-quality, sustainable and timeless materials produced in a socially, economically and environmentally responsible way, including FSC-certified wooden furniture and new wool from anti-mulesing sourcing for upholstering and walls.

A platform where science and technology are on center stage—where ideas are born, and where questions are put forth and answered—PMI Science Square is chock-full of interactive touchpoints. With cutting-edge features letting employees and visitors immerse themselves in carefully curated content, sparking curiosity and facilitating learning, the space is meant to inspire discussion and learning. The result: a meeting place of choice for PMI’s leaders, scientists and R&D experts seeking a functional, comfortable and aesthetically pleasing setting build by and for the latest scientific and technological innovation.

PMI Science Square isn’t just a space; it’s a testament to PMI’s vision of a future driven by innovation, sustainability, and the relentless pursuit of excellence.
