Located in the core area of Jinan Iron and Steel Works, the 3200 Blast Furnace Culture and Art Center has a total floor area of about 24,800 square meters and a construction area of 28,000 square meters. According to the design, the 3200 blast furnace in the former Jinan Iron and Steel plant is updated and utilized, and scientific transformation is carried out with the design principle of protecting industrial heritage buildings, aiming to give full play to the value of industrial heritage, make the blast furnace into a landmark building with distinctive industrial characteristics in the region, and create an open space of vitality and ecology. The architects put forward the innovative design concept of “light of technology, ring of the future”, taking the blast furnace as the main body to highlight the unique industrial icon of the blast furnace and emphasize the relationship between the building and the surrounding environment. Specifically, it uses the dynamic roof and viewing platform to create a multi-level and all-round viewing angle, bringing the public the experience of being close to nature.

The blast furnace before the renovation was an important production facility in Jinan Iron and Steel Works. Jinan Iron and Steel Works, founded in 1958, is one of the first batch of local backbone iron and steel enterprises in new China, and was once the largest production base of medium-thick plate in China. After more than 60 years of development and growth, it has become one of the important pillars supporting Jinan’s three major industries and has given birth to the distinctive culture of Jinan Iron and Steel. In response to the call for replacing old growth drivers with new ones, Jinan Iron and Steel stopped production in 2017 for industrial adjustment, and achieved transformation and upgrading and sustainable development by developing new industries and cultivating new growth drivers. At the same time, this has left a valuable industrial heritage for the region.
The design team follows three principles in practice: First, remove the bottom workshop that seriously blocked the furnace body and had low safety and only retain the blast furnace main body. Second, consider the blast furnace as an industrial artwork, and the newly placed building volume should not be too large and should be able to achieve a good integration with the blast furnace. Third, the combination of old and new buildings should be able to blend into the site of the surrounding forest park and highlight its own signature.
The 3200 blast furnace renovation design demolishes part of the plant and retain the main structure of the blast furnace and the industrial memory. The abstract and simplified “future ring” is used as the design language to create a very futuristic architectural image. Unlike traditional industrial buildings, the design leaves a striking visual impression on visitors. In addition, roof greening and landscaped walkway expand the range of outdoor recreational activities and create an effective dialogue between industry and nature. After the renovation, the Jinan Iron and Steel 3200 blast furnace will become a landmark cultural and art center in the eastern urban area. With the introduction of fashion elements such as art performance, fashion show, oil painting exhibition, art auction, jewelry display, outdoor music festival, and leisure business formats such as bars, cafes, fashion restaurants, Jinan will embrace a unique “night economy gathering area”. The collision of industrial culture and modern culture and the blend of “new” and “old” make the new image of urban civilization be shaped, and the blast furnace gains a kind of rebirth. The diverse urban functions, complex urban activities and better urban experience bring this place a unique charm that cannot be replicated.
