Gold Winner – Donghai Experimental Primary School Renovation And Expansion Project | Zhubo Design

Donghai Experimental Primary School is located in No. 20. Founded in 2004, the school is a full-time public primary school with an area of 11,000 square meters and a building area of 14,000 square meters. Building 1, 2, 3 and 4 are located in the interior of the base from south to north. School rolls in Futian District degree is especially limited, so the school is in urgent need of expansion. However, because of the rapid increase in the reconstruction and expansion of schools in Futian District, there are not many schools that can obtain the resources of making room for school buildings, teachers and students at Donghai School are still required to have classes in the original building, and Buildings 2-4 function as general and professional classrooms, teachers’ offices and dormitories, while the function of Building 1 is a lecture hall and an indoor playground, also, it is only feasible to demolish Building 1 to make room for the expansion in order to meet the need of normal teaching. Also, it is probably an impossible design task to demolish an area of 1790 square meters and initiate new construction of 15000 square meters by virtue of only 600 square meters of floor space.

In the case of extreme lack of above-ground land for building, we discussed in depth on the mode of developing underground space. If all the functions such as 500 people multi-function hall, playground, indoor swimming pool of constant temperature with large span and great story height were placed underground, firefighting and evacuation would become difficult, meanwhile, the depth of basement excavation would reach about 20m. In addition, the building next to it was an old building with a shallow foundation, so there would be a huge potential safety hazard to excavate such a deep basement.

In such an extreme situation, we decided to take advantage of the space above the inner circle of the runway to expand the area of land available for construction on the ground tactfully. In this way, the first floor was elevated, and the multi-function hall and gymnasium were built on it to liberate part of the underground space, and the basement excavation depth was decreased to ensure the safety of the old building and the normal classes of students. As a result, the first overhead layer formed a covered playground, which was very suitable for hot and rainy weather in Shenzhen in summer.

Finally, in the entire school project, about 90% of the building area of the No. 1 teaching building is built by MIC( Modular Integrated Construction), which greatly reduces the on-site construction waste and labor input, and the construction period is only 1/2 of the conventional construction, saving budget and time.
