Gold Winner – Fengshun Jianzhen Cultural and Sports Center by Mix Design Associates

Fengshun County of Meizhou municipality, Guangdong province has a rich history, a vibrant local culture, and abundant natural resources. Entering into a new era, the county needs to develop new comprehensive cultural facilities to upgrade and replace the outdated existing urban amenities and provide resting and recreational space for its residents.

The cultural and sports center will be located next to the Eastern bank of the Northern tributary of the Rongjiang River and will be surrounded by natural landscape. The multi functional complex will attract residents to come and spend their leisure time. The building complex is designed in harmony with the surrounding landscape. The cobblestone-shaped white gymnasium lies on top of the man-made hill. Beneath the hill are the museum, the library, the cultural center, and the exhibition hall. The hilltop is a public space with natural sceneries for residents to stay.

The total investment of the project is 900 million yuan. It covers 47,000 square meters with a total construction area of 80,000 square meters. The venues include a library, a culture center, a museum, a memorial hall, a gymnasium (capable of accommodating 3,000 people), and a conference center (capable of accommodating 1,000 people). It is a large-scale comprehensive development project that integrates culture, administrative services, and sports facilities. The conference center has already entered into service in July 2021.

The complex provides vibrant and accessible public space for residents to rest, read, relax, and enjoy sceneries and perfor.

The project design ditches the colossal buildings favored by traditional cultural centers. Instead, the complex merges the landscape with the city and connects to nature, offering full immersion in nature for its visitors.

The sloping green roof of the complex rises gently, merging the building with the surrounding environment into a man-made hill. Visitors can walk or jog on the trail, or take some time to rest on the grass and enjoy the distant landscape overlooking the calmly flowing Rongjiang River. The venues beneath the hill are equipped with floor-to-ceiling windows or skylights to enable natural lighting. Visitors can climb up the hill along the trail and get closer to nature.
