The clients were attracted to the site’s extraordinary tree canopy and asked us to design a house that felt as if they were living outdoors. They were drawn to spaces that were separated from each other indoors but each very connected to the exterior landscape; a collection of rooms connected to the outside and clearly defined on the inside.

The challenge was solving the programmatic needs of a home with a wall-less house. Our concept emerged from reconciling a functioning home with an outdoor feel. This led us to arrange the program along the four quadrants of the plan, separating the spaces with oolite “artery” walls that flow seamlessly between the exterior and the interior. The interior artery walls in oolite bring the exterior in, accentuating the experience that each room is a space on its own and connected to the outside. The exterior skin is a combination of glass and screens, creating a very transparent plane to the exterior that filters the desired amount of light and wind into the home. Grove Pavilion is our interpretation of “living outdoors.”
